It had been almost a decade since he had come back to the area he adored in his late teens and in his twenties. This area, a decade ago, was the place to live and the place to do business in the city. Jimmy had moved away from this district to live downtown with a girl, but that relationship went to hell and he was single again. He was now nearing forty and it was time to return to his roots, to where his adulthood was shaped and formed.
He rented an apartment that was cheaper than it was ten years earlier. It was closer to his workplace and it was safer, or so he thought. He had the same job in a pizza parlor for the last twenty years. But he was fine with that. What he really wanted to be was an artist and where he lived now was the place in the city where all the artists, writers, musicians and eccentrics congregated. He was happy with his decision.
He moved in to his new place on June 30th and woke up on July 1st to a beautiful dawn. He opened the drapes fully and got ready to go to work. He ate a decent breakfast, got dressed and headed out the door to grab a latte and catch his bus.
Jimmy loved being up before the rest of the world. His shift started at 5:30am so he got up at 4am. It was 4:45 am when left for work and the sun was beginning to peek on the horizon in the east. He began his walk when he noticed a pair of eyes watching him from a dumpster in the parking lot of his apartment. He stopped and looked closer, but now the eyes were gone. As he walked away he sensed that he was being watched. He heard a noise for the dumpster but ignored it and just kept on walking.
Just as he was exiting the alley he heard a rustling from a bush. He stopped where again he was met by a set of eyes. Then the eyes disappeared. As he walked away, again he heard the rustle from the bush, but just kept on walking.
He made his way down the street to the bus stop, looking for a coffee shop. He found one and entered, ordering a extra large latte. A door creaked open from the back and two eyes watched him. Then the door quickly shut and he left.
He quicken his pace and as he walked he passed by a bus stop bench and something grabbed onto his leg. The man was pierced with multiple needles in his veins. It was a homeless man that looked like a skeleton and moaned, "Help meeeee." Jimmy, startled, stomped on the man's arm and quick jogged away.
Then as he passed a door entryway a naked man staggered out in front of him with needles in his arms and legs and fell to the ground. Jimmy stepped passed him and walked quicker. "How much further to his bus stop?" He wondered.
He continued, everything seemed so different. Had he taken the wrong direction? Where was he? Then as he walked a box fell out of a window right in front of him. He picked it up and opened it. It was a doll with small needles poked all through its body. He quickly threw the box down on the ground. Then there was a scream followed by a loud thud as a body fell from a high window. The lady was dead as soon as she hit the ground. She had no top on and her back was punctured full of needles. He crossed the street to avoid the body. Suddenly he became nervous and needed to use a public washroom. He found one in a donut shop and entered. He did his business and flushed the toilet, but it was clogged with needles which floated to the water's surface. He dry heaved and left.
Finally he made it to his bus stop, just missing his bus. He would have to wait another 15 minutes. Inside the bus shelter there was a man passed out with a needle in his arm. On the bus bench there was another man in a drug induced coma. Then a man came out of a bush and said, "You're not from around here."
Jimmy said nothing and the man just looked at him. His eyes black like sockets with no eyes. Jimmy turned away. Then a man awoke from the gutter and slowly started to crawl his way towards Jimmy. The bus finally came and Jimmy hopped on. He was the only one on the bus. The bus drove fast and even ran a red light to escape the area. Jimmy dinged for the next stop, but the driver passed it and then passed the one after that as well.
Jimmy yelled, "You missed my stop."
He got no response. He grew angry and stomped to the front of the bus and there was the driver passed out with a needle in his arm.
