Basil Watkins was a man that was obsessed with time, most specifically with being on time. Basil had learned a lesson the hard way when it came to being punctual. He was 23 years old at the time and he had just graduated from university and was looking for his first job in computer sales which was a very competitive field. He managed to land an interview with Apple as a salesman. This was the holy grail of computer sales. Basil had two weeks to prepare for the interview. He did everything in his power to prepare as he thought about every conceivable question that he could be asked and answered them over and over until he had them down perfect. He was ready for the interview but the night before he found himself repeatedly checking his alarm clock. He was worried because it was old and that night he thought about driving to the shopping mall before it closed to buy a new alarm clock, but then just as he was walking out the door he changed his mind, but only seconds later he changed his mind again and hopped into his car and raced to the mall. He had less than five minutes to buy one.
Inside the electronics store he quickly found the aisle and grabbed four different alarm clocks and went to the till to pay. The lady asked him if he planned to purchase all of them and he said he did and she looked at him weirdly.
At home he became nervous and filled with panic. He started to fiddle with the clocks and couldn't decide which one to use. Before he knew it, it was midnight and he was strung out. By 3am he had all four new clocks set but he couldn't fall asleep and he kept getting up every five minutes to check them. Soon it was 5am and he was still up. His alarms were set for 6am. Then at about 5:30am he hit the wall and fell into a deep sleep.
All of the alarms went off at exactly 6am but he slept through them thinking he was having a nightmare of being chased by police sirens. When he finally got up, it was noon. He had blown his big chance.
He vowed to never let this happen again so Basil started to collect alarm clocks by the dozen. His routine of checking his 400 plus clocks took him several hours every night and then he would get up during the night to randomly check some that he thought he had forgotten.
A year after he had overslept his Apple interview he was able to land an interview at Microsoft, but again somehow he overslept the day of his interview and missed out on his chance. The day after after he went berserk and had a nervous breakdown and ended up in an asylum where another patient gave him a gift which was a coo coo clock that had been hand crafted. Basil put it up in his room and when the clock struck the top of the hour, instead of a bird popping out and saying, "coo-coo, coo-coo." A wooden head of Basil popped out and said, "coo-coo, coo-coo."
Basil stood looking at his wooden head popping out of the clock making the stupid noise. He did not find it very funny. The man who made him the clock sat in his cell laughing when he heard the clock go coo-coo, knowing it would drive Basil insane.
