In every type of sport from hockey to soccer there are people which are fans, but I dont think that they know that the word fan is short for fanatic which is a word to describe someone that is crazy. I have found that the name of the sports team seems to have a great impact on the fans and what they wear to the game to support their team. In the case of the sport of hockey there is a team called the New Jersey Devils who at one time were said to have been cursed to never win the Stanley Cup because of their name. But they eventually did win the Stanley Cup in 1996.
But over the course of their existence the New Jersey Devils have had some fans that have taken their loyalty to the extremes. One example was a man named Don Hayford who grew up near the Meadowlands swamps that surrounded the New Jersey Devil's arena. As a kid he did the normal things that a fan would do such as paint the team's logo on his face and wear the team's jersey, but as he got older and the Devil's won a few Stanley Cups he began to get extreme and fanatical as he began the process of tattooing his whole body in Devils. Nearly two years later at a cost of over one hundred thousand dollars his whole body was covered in tattoos, except his face which he planned to do something most dramatic.
Donald worked two jobs for nearly a year and when he had saved up enough money he decided to do the extreme and have plastic surgery to his body by adding horns to his head and have his fingers and toes tapered to look like pitchforks. Once the surgery was complete he only had one last step to complete his appearance and that was to go through a medical process where he would get his skin dyed red. This would be permanent. He completed this procedure on his 25th birthday and he now considered himself the ultimate New Jersey Devil's fan.
But as time passed by he thought that only physically he was the most dedicated New Jersey Devil's fan but he now had to commit himself to the cause in a spiritual manner, so he decided to integrate himself mind and body by embracing the cult of Satanism. Now in his head he was truly the king of the Devil's fans.
But as he got older the Devil's team was no longer winning and they started to become the disgrace of the National Hockey League. He was no longer feeling the passion for the team. Then in the year 2040 the New Jersey Devils, after much pressure from religious authorities changed the name of the team from Devils to Scorpions.
Don Hayford then sat in front of a mirror contemplating how he would look as a scorpion.
