SLEIGHT OF HAND AND DECEPTIONS

Mr. Smug

12/30/2020

Originally he was not known as Mr. Smug, but that is what he came to be known. Jordan was his name and he came from a small town. He arrived in the big city on his 19th birthday and got a job as a fast food worker. Soon his brother arrived and together they rented a mould and mouse infested basement suite in a questionable area of town. But for Jordan that was okay because he was now in the big city and struggles were to be expected in this transition period of his life. But trouble started about 2 months in to his city life when his hours were cut in half at his fast food job. For days him and his brother ate nothing but bread and drank tap water. Then after several months Jordan caught a break. He got a full time job in a warehouse which paid him 4 dollars an hour more than the fast food job. Things were looking up. After about three months of excitement his new job started to grind on him as the work was very physical and exhausting. He knew this was not the job for him, but for now he would have to stick with it. His brother found a job in the same warehouse, but he too grew tired of it.
They continued to look for other, more sustainable work. They eventually came across an add for two clerks in a grocery store. It was full time, but paid a few dollars less than the warehouse job. But it was relatively easy work that was doable long term. The two brothers settled in.

After about two months of work Jordan's brother Kevin had begun humiliating him in front of other staff members making him the butt end of every joke. Jordan hated this and resented his brother for it. Soon everyone at was making fun of Jordan. Little did Jordan know was that he was weak and spineless and wouldn't stick up for himself. He kept quiet but he secretly wanted to kill his brother and all of those who made fun of him.

Jordan then met a girl who he claimed to like. She wasn't very pretty at all but had enormous breasts and Jordan loved to play with them. One time she was caught with her hands down his pants in the lunch room and both received a reprimand for their behaviour. Soon he got tired of her because she didn't want to go all the way so he moved on to a girl who was nasty and very willing.

At work Jordan got promoted to a management role but was pushed around by his superiors. He was still spineless and wouldn't stick up for himself. Then one day he quit.

He tried another job that required some educational courses to be taken but he lacked the intelligence to complete them. So for months he stayed at home, unemployed, watching porn and drinking beer. He had been unemployed for almost five months so he reapplied for his old job as a grocery clerk and got it back. But now he was a changed man. He was going to be lazy because that was how all of his superiors had got to the top. He was now going to deliberately shaft people who he believed had done him wrong.

The main problem for Jordan in the workplace was that he was lazy and stupid. He thought he was smart but he wasn't. To Jordan the whole world was against him and the system was corrupt. He believed that he was owed by everyone despite never taking personal stock of himself. He believed he was never at fault and everyone else was to blame. Jordan was perfect in a world he never made.

At work he systematically eliminated people he didn't like including his brother. When he got married he didn't invite any of his old friends to the wedding because he thought he was better than them. At work meetings he wouldn't talk because he thought it made him look intelligent to be silent but the reality was he had nothing to say. And when he was forced to talk he would stutter and look like a fool. But to Jordan he thought he was a genius with his own inner logic that nobody else could understand. He would sit upstairs in his office all day, do nothing and then go home. Employees would ask him questions and he said he would get back to them but he never did. This way they would never ask again. He got fat and depressed. He was paid handsomely for doing nothing. Then one day he was fired.

He went home and complained to his wife saying he was going to sue them and railed on about how he was screwed over. To him he was entitled to a big salary, and not having to earn it. The people that did work hard were stupid and that's why they stayed as workers, he thought. Being lazy and smug was the key to success. Being honest and hard working was for suckers. Then his wife left him. Dumb bitch, he thought. He could do better.

So there he sat all alone looking at himself in the mirror, he turned away from his reflection. He went to the washroom and saw his reflection again in the bathroom mirror and looked away. He sat in front of the television. The screen was off but again he saw his reflection and screamed. He had trouble breathing, his heart thumped out of beat. He pulled open the drapes to look outside but it was still night and there was his face reflecting back from the window. He screamed, "Why don't you leave me alone!"

He looked at reflection in the window one last time and hollered, "I hate you!" He then smashed his head into the glass.
