Nearly a decade ago I had a friend named Tyson who worked in a company that specialized in retail clothing and fashion. The company was considered high end as they only sold top of the line apparel from Europe. The clothing company was a family owned business that was growing quickly and expanding many outlets throughout the country. With the growth of the company there became opportunity for many of the current employees to move up the hierarchy. My friend Tyson was one of these employees that was given the opportunity to become an assistant manager at one of the outlets. He took the position. At the time the company did not have a person that was directly involved with advertising so Tyson was able to convince the owner that he could take on this responsibility because he had a degree in marketing.
He was still getting paid as a manager which was much less than a marketing position would have compensated him but he was moving in the career direction that he really wanted. Over the next few months Tyson was able to establish himself in marketing. On average he spent another thirty hours a week of his own time developing a marketing plan to be implemented by the owner.
One day Tyson went to see his owner in her office to present his marketing plan and she loved what he had in mind and a week later she gave him permission to start the process of putting his plan into action. The weeks passed by and the sales increased dramatically. Tyson was excited at the possibility of becoming the permanent marketing manager and leaving his position of assistant manager behind.
Then one day Tyson noticed a cooling between him and the owner. For whatever reason she would give him the cold shoulder and would not engage in any conversation more than just a hello. She would not return his emails and whenever he asked to meet her she claimed that she didn't have time.
A week later the owner held a meeting where a lady named Sabrina Pare was introduced as the new marketing manager. Tyson was crushed as he now knew why his owner was not talking to him. He decided not to confront the owner about anything. Tyson then found out that the new marketing manager was making four times what he was. The owner then told him he could be her assistant and work with her on his own time. He found out quickly that Sabrina was a major league bitch and everything that he said or did was wrong. She then reversed everything he had done in marketing which had increased sales by nearly forty percent.
Sabrina then implemented her own scheme with a budget of one million dollars a year. Within two months sales had dropped sixty percent and marketing expenses had increased by 540 percent. Sabrina claimed that Tyson was the problem and that she needed a qualified assistant that knew what they were doing. The owner told him the next day that he would strictly be an assistant manager because he was not at the same level as Sabrina. Sabrina had told the owner that Tyson was incompetent and was sabotaging her marketing plans.
Sabrina got her assistant and six months later another. Expenses continued to skyrocket and sales continued to drop and soon the financial officer told the owner that in a year if they continued down this path the company would be bankrupt. The media expert Sabrina continued to blame Tyson saying that his original marketing plan had shifted the demographics of the company which caused the financial problems. Tyson was then fired from the company upon Sabrina's request despite him no longer having anything to do with the marketing. A year later Sabrina was fired and slowly the company reversed its course and recovered financially. Tyson was hired back and three months after he returned he received a letter in the mail from a lawyer representing Sabrina Pare saying that she was suing him for a million dollars because he had damaged her reputation and caused her business to go bankrupt.
