As a ten year old boy I was sitting at home watching television and just as I was about to get up from my chair during a commercial break a most interesting advertisement came across the set. There were four kids sitting in a dark room with a mysterious light shining on their faces and they all had their hands on some type of strange board. The one child asked a question and they all closed their eyes and mysteriously their hands moved across the board in an unconscious manner. Then one of the children screamed and the commercial was over. I sat back in my chair shocked. The announcers voice came on the television and said, "Ouija Board, now available at all toy stores."
I started to think about the Ouija Board trying to figure out exactly what it was. It seemed to be some sort of board where you would try to communicate with dead spirits, but I wasn't too sure.
Later on that day I asked my father about it and his eyed darted to me and he said, "You saw that commercial about it, didn't you. They should not be advertising something like that to children. A Ouija Board is not something to be played around with by anyone, certainly not by children. That commercial should be banned. I hope you don't think that you are getting one because you are not under any circumstance. Do you hear me?"
By this time his eyes were bulging out of their sockets and I had got the message. Now I wanted one even more but I didn't know how I was going to buy one. I had the money but I had no way of getting to the toy store without my parents knowing.
Then one day came when my father was out of town and my mom was clueless as to what was going on so I decided to walk to the local toy store to purchase a Ouija Board. I walked inside the store and received all sorts of strange looks from people because I was so young and alone. But I didn't care and quickly walked down the board game aisle and grabbed a Ouija Board and stared at in fascination. I then went to the till to pay and the lady told me that I must be 18 to purchase it and she then asked me where my parents were. I didn't answer and ran out of the store.
When I got back home I was disappointed at not being able to buy the Ouija Board, but I was determined to get one. A couple of days later I was riding my bike in the neighborhood and I stopped to talk to an eccentric man who lived down the street. He had a strange accent that sounded like he was dracula. I asked him if he knew anything about Ouija Boards and he said that he had several of them and used them regularly. He then went inside his home and came out with battered box and said I could have it. He told me to be careful with it and explained how to use it. I excitedly took it home and hid it in my treehouse. I then called over several of my friends and we opened the box and set it up. I asked a question, we put our hands on the moving planchette, closed our eyes and it started to move around. Finally our hands stopped on a letter which my friend Todd wrote down. After I was finished asking questions I looked at the words and asked Todd why he had written a capital R backwards and that's when I realized the letters on the board were in Russian.
