I walked down the alley slowly, only the pavement remained, the houses had long ago been removed. Where the houses once were only craters remained and over the years of abandonment the craters had been filled with garbage and any refuse blown in by the wind. I looked down into one of the craters to see if there was anyone living inside; there was something down at the bottom that was feeding off the garage, but whatever was there wasn't human. I made my way down the street to where I used to live and much to my surprise my house at the end of the block was still standing. I looked over to the side of it and the detached garage managed to remain erect but in a decrepit state.
I walked up to the back gate, unlatched it and entered the backyard that was overgrown with grass and full with all kinds of junk. The sidewalk on the way to the back door of the house was cracked and sunken to one side. The screen door to the back entrance was all that remained of the entry and one could see through it into the blackness of the house. But as I entered I noticed that there was a candlelight by the stairs. I picked it up and began to move carefully through the house unaware of what to expect. I stood by the back window and looked into the yard where I had played as a child. For whatever reason a street lamp remained on in the back alley, it was the only street lamp still lit in the area. I contemplated why was it still left on when there was nobody left in the house.
I stepped into the living room and saw all of my old books scattered on the floor. I crossed the floor to the front window and looked outside. The houses that used to be across the street were all gone and all that remained was a empty black field. In the front yard of my former house there was a for sale sign that hung off a hinge at a crazy angle. I left the livingroom and headed for my bedroom. The door was shut, I tried to open it but it wouldn't budge and after ten minutes I gave up and walked away.
I made my way down the creaking steps into the basement, my candlelight providing limited visibility. Room by room I mazed through the underworld of the house and all I saw were spray painted walls and various types of household items on the floor. I went back upstairs where I thought I saw my parents lying on the bed in the master bedroom. Then my candle extinguished and the house was steeped into darkness. I called out to my parents but there was no answer. I left the room silently and headed towards the back door to exit and just as I was leaving I felt a cold hand grab hold of my shoulder...
