The early 1930s was a time of forced famine in Ukraine. The Stalinist Soviet government had initiated a reign of terror on the country. Stalin's Soviet henchmen went from small town to small town, from city to city, from village to village and confiscated every loaf of bread, every bit of grain from the silos and the people's houses. Ukraine, the bread basket of the world was being starved into submission by Stalin.
Farmers were forbid to seed or harvest grain. The price when caught farming or possessing bread was execution. People hid grain in walls, floorboards and buried it the ground. But the secret police went house to house tearing up the floors and walls confiscating any type of grain then hauled away the violators in the middle of the night. Millions upon millions died in the Holodomor starvation.
During this time of famine there were certain horrors that were brought to light. The most significant of these would be cannabilism and we will examine this horror in more depth within the Ukrainian context.
In a village outside of Kharkiv, Ukraine, there was a family where the eldest son, Stanislaw, had fallen into a delirium from starvation. Every person reacts slightly different to starvation and the effects it will have on their body. Some people just keep moving and then one day while walking they drop dead. Others sleep most of their time with little movement and some go into a delirious state from a lack of nutrients going to the brain. The latter was the case of Stanislaw. He muttered unintelligible words and randomly would try and raise his arm only to fail in doing so. He had not eaten in weeks. The rest of the family was in horrible condition as well but not as bad as he was.
His mother and father had talked about eating their son once he died. They would then dismiss the thought hoping things would get better, but the grim reality was starting to set in: they would have to eat him. The family had four other children that were starving and rail thin. They wanted Stanislaw to live and could not comprehend the thought of cannibalizing him.
His condition worsened, his breathing and heart stopped and his eyes closed forever. The parents had talked it over: they were going to eat their son, but they had to wait until until the priest blessed the body. It was winter, so they placed the body outside in the yard to preserve it while the father kept it under guard until the priest arrived. The number one crime at this time in Ukraine was the theft of a corpse. It should be noted that the Soviet government had made it a severe crime for the act of cannabilism.
Several says later the preist arrived in disguise, as religion was not allowed in communist Soviet Union. Religion still existed but almost like a black market entity getting pushed underground. The priest quietly read the prayers and blessed the frozen body in the house and left.
The family waited a couple of days for their son's corpse to thaw. The father told his wife to take the kids into another room so they didn't see what he was doing and so his kids didn't know what they would be eating. He cut the body and took the first bite and swallowed. That's when his son's eyes opened for a split second. The father screamed at what had happened. He told his wife and they decided to bury the body in the back that night.
A couple nights later the father started to scream in his sleep. His wife dismissed it as stress from a traumatic incident. A day later he started to make grunting and snarling noises and attacked one of the children. His wife hit him over the head with a piece of iron and knocked him out. She immediately tied him to a chair and found the priest. She told the priest that he ate part of the son but the son awoke and now her husband was acting like a demon. The priest said that the body was likely in a starvation induced coma and he was very concerned about her husband eating a body that was not dead. The priest came immediately to the house.
When he got there the children were crying on the front step. He entered the home with the wife. The husband was spitting and snarling, and making demonic screams, but was still tied to the chair.
The priest took out the cross and put it to the father's face. The father made a inhuman scream at the site of it. The priest than splashed the father with holy water. The high pitched screams of agony continued.
The exorcism was about to begin. Then the priest blacked out when he saw the son looking through the back window.
