When one thinks about travelling into the future one must contemplate the possiblity of the good and the bad. Will the future be one of technological marvels or of bliss and misery? Or could man retrogress back to a primitive state like Europe was during the dark ages?
For some like the time traveller scientist named Gilbert Leroy realized that as more and more people traveled into the future or went back to the past they made an impression on the world around them and were simultaneously altering history every time. So if Gilbert Leroy was to travel to let's say the year 3056 today and again five years from now, it would be completely different because of everyone altering history with their own travels. So in a sense there would be no history because it was always changing, never consistent. But what did that mean for one living in the present. Let's say Gilbert's mother was murdered by a time traveler, what would happen to Gilbert in the space time continuum? Would he simply vanish from the earth, never to be born?
This was quite the problem for time travelers and one might argue that if someone had murdered your mother and you were never born you could then come back to this earth if someone went back in time before your mother's murder and killed the man that murdered her and then you would suddenly reappear. Strange stuff.
Gilbert decided to travel ahead in time to figure out when he was going to die, just for curiosity's sake. He was currently 55 years old and decided that if he went ahead by fifty years that would insure his death. He entered into his time machine and set the dials for the year 2070 and hit the "Travel" button. The machine started to shake and the lights went off as he was transported through a tunnel at virtual speed. At the corners of his eyes he could see history passing by him. Ten minutes later the machine stopped and he opened the door and exited into the year 2070.
He walked around the city and it was not as different as one would think. The advancements were minimal but the digital world ruled. Overall people were the same and looked miserable and depressed in an ever increasing inhuman world.
Gilbert then purchased the latest technological device which were voice activated virtual goggles. He then searched his name and death date. To his horror he had died three times and was buried in three plots which were side by side in the same graveyard.
He went out to see the unbelievable as he read the first tombstone "Here lies Gilbert Leroy January 1st 1965 to July 2035, 4th dimension". The second tombstone read "Here lies Gilbert Leroy January 1st 1965 to August 15 2029, 7th dimension", and the last tombstone read, "Here lies Gilbert Leroy January 1st 1965 to March 21 2024, 10th dimension".
I couldn't figure it out so I asked a man walking by, "What do the dimensions mean?"
He looked at me puzzled and said, "Don't you know that now we can also travel in other dimensions and die multiple deaths and live multiple lives?"
I was speechless.
