He had fallen asleep for a prolonged period of time. When he woke up he was in a cave that was dark, damp and frequented by various species of bats. He got to his feet and could see a light several hundred meters away. He hoped it would be an exit out of the cave. As he walked he looked at his fingernails which were over ten inches long and his toenails were about half that size. He felt his face and noticed he had a beard that was down to his stomach and his hair was down to his knees. We wondered how long he had been sleeping.
As he approached the mouth of the cave he had to slow up as he was blinded by the bright sunlight. He shielded his eyes but within seconds a dark grey cloud suffocated the sun and world in front of him became void of color and shape. For the first time he was able to see his deathly pale white and wrinkled skin.
Walking out of the cave he noticed that there was nothing around him. That's when he noticed a path that was leading into the horizon. He looked down at it and noticed how worn it was; he started walking in a gingerly fashion. He had never seen a landscape so bleak and desolate. As he walked he thought about many things such as how and why did he end up in the cave? Secondly, he wondered how long he had been inside it. But now as he made his way across the wasteland he asked himself where he was and where were all the people.
He walked until he could no longer walk and flopped to the ground in exhaustion. It was now dark and he lay on his back looking at the stars thinking to himself about life and what his fate would be. Then his eyes closed from fatigue and he drifted off into another sleep.
When he woke the sun was shining down on his face. He sat up and looked at his fingernails which were now twice as long as they were before he went to sleep. His skin was even more wrinkled and his bones were more brittle. Barely able to get up, once again, he started walking, but the pace was much slower and exhaustion came to him quicker. That night he dropped to the ground and fell asleep within seconds.
He awoke the next morning dehydrated and famished but there was no food or water around him. He could sense the end was drawing near and he felt like an animal that wanted to crawl under a rock and die. He wondered if this was it, was this the way he was going to die? In a state of delirium he got to his feet and struggled along the worn out path into oblivion.
He screamed out, "Hello! Where is everybody? Someone please help me."
He heard a laugh but he could not figure out that it came from inside his own head. He then fell flat on his face and seconds later he died not knowing where he was or what had happened to him.
Little did he know that his situation was hopeless from the moment he woke up in the cave as he was the last man on earth.
