There is a giant swath of land located in the middle of a city in North America that has been dedicated to the science of agriculture. For decades people thought the land to be of pure virgin soil. But as the decades passed the residents that lived surrounding the experimental farm had found that their health was generally in decline and had a life expectancy of 52, whereas in other areas of the city it was 77.
The citizens grew ever suspicious about the farm as for years it would give off a wickedly potent smell that caused people to head indoors and shut their windows. But even so, the potent smell still found it's way into the smallest of cracks in the houses. Over a period of twenty years nearly 95% of the children in the area developed asthma or other lung related illnesses. The citizens fought back and demanded a public inquiry into the farm to find out what type pollution it was giving off. The government would not specify what type of pollution the farm was emitting, but they settled dozens of lawsuits which totaled into the billions.
The government claimed that the farm was considered top secret and documents could not be revealed for another twenty years. But after the lawsuits and the bad press the residents began to pour out of the area surrounding the farm. Within ten years over 300 households had moved away and nobody was interested in purchasing the vacant land.
Then in the early 2010s the classified documents became declassified and what had originally happened at the farm in 1960 horrified the people and caused great distrust in the government and their ability to withhold information.
Apparently in 1960 the experimental farm was an actual farm but the city was not yet developed so there were no residential houses surrounding it. Then one night a nuclear powered satellite crashed into the farm spewing radioactive debris for an area of 6 square kilometers. The government did their best to clean it up. But soon the powers that be decided they would use the radioactive soil to experiment growing crops and raising livestock to see if they would be edible. One must remember that this was the height of the cold war and the chances of a nuclear fallout from an atomic bomb were very real and securing a food source for this situation would have been a very high priority.
But the government did not tell the people about the crashed satellite. The government believed the radioactive material was only in the soil, but it wasn't. It was being blown out of the ventilation from the chicken coops and pig stys which was what caused the awful smell and lead to the spike in lung disorders.
But there were those that believed that a small nuclear bomb had actually been dropped on the farm as a show by the Russians of their advanced technology as well as jab at the western power government's lack of awareness of the Russian's super stealth missile systems. These conspiracy theorists also thought that the government had not declared that a nuclear bomb had hit North American soil to prevent panic and covered it up by saying nothing and then 50 years later claimed it was a downed satellite.
The cold war has been over since 1990 and one must wonder how many other unexplained phenomena or events were directly related to American Russian Space and Arms race. As for the radioactive farm it has now been dismantled and the contaminated soil has been taken away to an undisclosed location leaving the entire area looking like a barren wasteland of a nuclear war.
