There is an ancient mystery that takes us back more than 30,000 years inside a cave in Eastern Europe. And just recently, no more than 100 years ago, were skulls found in this cave by a group of explorers.
November 1917, a group of cave explorers from all over Europe set out on a cave exploration expedition in Eastern Europe seeking to find anything that may be of interest to them. There was nothing that they were looking for in particular, but later on during the first week of their expedition they would make a discovery that could prove to be part of the missing link in the evolution of the human skull and might help explain how man had existed for so long with little or no development and then all of a sudden, over the last 30,000 years had taken massive intellectual steps to become who we are today.
The group of six entered entered a cave early one morning and proceeded into the unknown labyrinth that straddled the Ukrainian Russian border. They had been walking for several hours and were growing tired and hungry so they sat down to have a bite to eat when one of the hikers noticed that there was a bone like substance that was visible behind a couple of smaller rocks. The hikers immediately played their flashlights over the bones and determined the bones to be that of a skull. Three of the students were experts in the field of anthropology and knew right away these were not skulls of the Homo Sapiens.
Carefully the rocks were moved and they were shocked to see that there was not just one skull but there were several dozen all set in a circular formation. They were so hypnotized by the skulls that they failed to recognize that the rest of the skeleton structure for each body was there as well. They all stood back and looked at how all of the bodies were all lying in the same position. The skeletons were on their backs with their arms crossed over their chests but that was only part of the eeriness. The other part of was how the bodies were all lying in a perfect circle that was at least fifty feet in diameter.
Upon closer examination the explorers knew the skeletons were not that of the Neanderthals. They were something that had never been seen before in history. Everything about the torso and legs was exact to the modern day man but the skull was shaped in a very unusual way. A way that would have allowed the brain to develop in a way previously unthought of.
The students left the cave and called in more experts who also agreed that the skulls of this unidentified human species could likely form the missing link in the evolution of man and his recent rapid increase in intelligence after hundreds of thousands of years of stagnation.
There was one other clue to the possible intelligence levels of the unknown skeletons and that was the evidence of a possible mass suicide that would indicate advanced spiritual or occult beliefs. The position of the bodies in the circular formation with the skeleton's arms crossed over their chests was curious and led investigators to believe mass suicide was a likelihood.
But why mass suicide? And who were these skeleton people with the odd shaped skulls and possible advanced mystical occult beliefs?
Despite further research in the area for the last 100 years no more is known about the skeletons or why they died the way they did. For now, their history and identity remains a mystery.
